Volunteer

The success of the Land Trust’s mission depends on volunteers who help us fulfill our programs. Volunteers and donors are the heroes of conservation! Volunteers extend our reach to educate, enroll, and invite others to participate in saving the Mojave Desert. Please consider investing a few hours in one of our volunteer opportunities:

Education and Outreach

This program raises awareness of both the need to protect and conserve the Mojave Desert and of the Land Trust as the leader in this effort. According to your interest, you may choose to distribute brochures, help with direct mail campaigns, enroll new members through local speaking opportunities (clubs, church groups, etc.), and support the coordination of events and activities, and fundraising campaigns.  Please call our office or send us an email to participate.

Stewardship Program

The land purchased by the Land Trust must be permanently monitored to ensure it remains untouched, even if it is donated to the National Park Service or other agency for management. Monitoring property is one of the fundamental activities a land trust or natural resource management agency can perform. Volunteers play a central role in the Land Trust’s ability to ensure that donated lands or fee lands are protected forever. Stewards are trained by professionals and will learn to:
  • Locate properties in the field using GPS units
  • Monitor properties including maintaining a written and photo log
  • Document threats, such as illegal use by off-highway vehicles, cutting of illegal roads, dumping
  • Help with on-the-ground restoration when needed
  • Document Long Term Change as part of the NPS data base on the effects of global warming
  • Document wildlife sightings for habitat modeling
Stewardship events are generally conducted monthly as group activities, can include guided campouts in the beautiful wilderness, one-day outings, easy to challenging hikes, and stewardship trainings
